IT Projects

My work history includes business IT systems support and engineering test activities. Overall, my experience has focused around development and maintenance of technical systems, with an orientation to serving the needs of people engaged in business. My academic training was diverse and culminated in a program that blended computer science with communication engineering. If you would like more information, I can provide a resume.

During the past few months, I supported two large expo-style events with wireless hotspot internet service. The problem presented to me in both cases was: Given a large convention hall with no working broadband service, ensure that each of some 200 vendors and many attendees inside the hall can browse the internet, check email, execute downloads, etc., using a local wireless hotspot. Three concerns were aggregate bandwidth, area coverage, and number of simultaneous connections.

The general form of the solution I provided is shown in the diagram below. A specific implementation (head-end) is shown in the photo. These projects involved coordination with a broadband provider, local facilities personnel, and event sponsors. I designed the local network, specified and purchased the equipment and cabling, configured and tested the devices, and monitored the event while adjusting device configurations as needed to optimize the service during times of peak or asymmetric load distribution. Overall, both projects were successful and fun learning experiences. I’m happy to discuss specifics including design trade-offs, practical considerations, etc.
